Pentax Papilio II 6.5x21

BUDGET

A measured 0.58 m close focus turns the Papilio into a practical tool for insects, plants and museums; its 290 g body travels easily, but 21 mm objectives and no waterproofing restrict field use.

WHY THE PRICE IS JUSTIFIED

Its value comes from the specialized close-focus mechanism, synchronized objective convergence, compact Porro optical design, fully multi-coated optics, BAK4 prisms and 290 g weight. The 50 cm minimum focus is genuinely distinctive, but the 21 mm objectives produce a 3.2 mm exit pupil and are less suitable in dim conditions.

CRITERIA

8/10
Build QualityCompact rubber-cased body, controlled mechanics and tripod support; it is not waterproof and includes small accessory compromises.
8/10
PerformanceOutstanding 50 cm macro capability, stable 6.5x view and good daytime detail; small objectives limit low-light performance and edge sharpness declines.
9/10
ValueA distinctive close-focus tool at a moderate price, with capabilities unavailable from conventional compact binoculars.

IDEAL FOR

  • ·Butterfly, insect and plant observation
  • ·Museums and galleries
  • ·Travel and everyday carry
  • ·Children and adults sharing binoculars

NOT FOR

  • ·Rainy or wet-weather observation
  • ·Serious low-light viewing
  • ·Users requiring maximum edge sharpness at distance

DESIGN & ERGONOMICS

Unusual rounded uni-body, grippy rubber and 290 g weight make it an inviting close-observation tool. Click-stop eyecups and positive diopter adjustment work well; the small, very light focus wheel can move too easily. Not waterproof.

LONGEVITY

Not waterproof. Rubber casing aids handling, but the close-focus moving mechanism needs protection from dust and rain. Repair access, spare parts and a market-specific warranty were not established.
